Scarborough Open Air Theatre is an open air theatre in Northstead Manor Gardens, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England. It was built in 1932. In 2008 planning permission was received for a major renovation.[1] The £3.5 million scheme to transform Scarborough's Open Air Theatre was completed in May 2010.[2][2][3] Apollo Resorts and Leisure have been selected by Scarborough Borough Council to operate the Open Air Theatre. Plans to build a permanent backstage area at Scarborough's Open Air Theatre have received unanimous backing by councillors.[4] Once the theatre is open "the venue will stage a mixed entertainment programme including music concerts, opera productions and community events".[4] The capacity of the theatre is 6,500.[5]
The theatre was officially opened by The Queen accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh on 20 May 2010.[6]
During the World Cup 2010 all England football matches have been shown live on a large TV screen.
Acts like Elton John and Urban hip-hop group N-Dubz have performed in the theatre.
